Thanks. You certainly know a lot of stuff. Oh yes, it was Darius, wasn't it, and the Egyptians welcomed Alexander as bringing freedom and he proclaimed himself the son of one of their gods as well as the son of Zeus. Thanks for the link btw I'll check it out, my knowledge of that period is scanty at best :) And you certainly debunk that tired old stereotype of stupid, 'other', superficial sex workers. I hope right-wingers see your blog and their brains implode over how an ex-whore can be smarter than them and actually educated about sex work instead of deciding it's 'bad' by looking in a book written 2,000 years ago by an undemocratic patriarchal society.

I didn't know Sappho was a contemporary of Aesop or that he was Ethiopian, I thought he was Greek. That is a great story. I always loved 'Ozymandias'. The Roman empire was necessarily very multicultural and people travelled a lot, an amount of travelling that didn't happen again till the invention of the steamship, and this story illustrates that very well. Were the Ptolemy dynasty in power yet or was Amasis II a local? I've always thought it a little odd that Cleopatra 7 is considered the last pharoah, because she was Greek so Egypt was essentially a colony/independent, but ruled by foreigners so I don't see a real difference that Rome ruled Egypt after her death -it just passed from one foreign power to another.

@ V W Singer: yeah, it would be a historical and cultured film. Educational, too, but not for kids! I'd love it to be made. Much better than that misogynistic Cinderrella anyway...the moral of Cindy was 'marriage will solve all your problems and is the be-all and end-all of life'. Being an educated slave, a wealrhy prostitute and then Pharoah's mistress is a much better story.

This historical tale would make a much better film than Cinderlla.

Just imagine the imagery. Ancient Greece, guests appearances by Aesop and Sappho, the Temple of Delphi, sandal stealing eagles, and the heroine being swept off her feet by a Pharaoh. And all the sex of course :)

The first of these stories, which began shortly after her death, claimed that she had built the third of the Great Pyramids. This is of course ridiculous ...

Not so fast! That may be a "metaphor" for something else!

... Trouser Tent, Blue Steel, Eric, Woody, Pup Tent, Chub, Tent Pole, Bishop, Wedding Tackle, Pan Handle ...

Pyramid???

It COULD be!! :P
