Let me add a few small items.
When King Ludwig I. met Lola Montez, he was 60 years old and she 28. It is true or only embellished, when they met for the first time she showed him a lot of skin. Two days later they were lovers. By the way, he was a womanizer like few others.
Ludwig cared for her financially in an overly generous fashion, even after she had to flee to Switzerland. The total amount he lavished on her, converted in to-days money, was calculated at 2,3 Million Euros. Not bad for two years of companionship.
She loved to antagonize; In Munich, too, she went out smoking cigars in public, one of these cigars is still exhibited at the local town museum. Worse was her behaviour in presence oft he queen (mother of eight) which infuriated the Munich society, which in turn led to his abdication.
IMHO opinion she was incapable of having a intimate relationsship with the other sex. The was a female flying dutchman.
In your comments you mention that Lola is remenbered in modern Germany quite positively. NO, NO, NO. When Lola met Ludwig, Bavaria was still Bavaria, they (very reluctantly) joined the German Reich in 1871, and a few still resent that. The affair Lola Montez was and is wonderful gossip, a soap, but a sad tale of a haugthy, greedy woman and an aging man who had difficulties getting old.

PS. The Sarah Vaughn song is wonderful.

The novel "Royal Flash" by George Macdonald Fraser, has a lot about Lola Montez in it; it was where I first heard of her as well. It is very worth reading.
