The medicine man shaking a rattle and doing a dance probably believes that this will influence the weather. The politician advocating for a law oftentimes knows full well that this will not produce a more moral society (by whatever standards he and his constituents measure morality). I can not make myself believe that the people who keep voting more and more funding for abstinence-only sex-ed truly believe that it is reducing the amount of teen sex going on. But they do hope to fool the “tribe,” and this makes them dishonest medicine men, doing dances they know don’t work.

But I believe that I do benefit from living in a freer society.

Thus, I have a selfish reason to advocate for legality, along with the general principle of wanting to end the persecution of others.
