"You’re very intelligent and confident, Maggie. It’s no wonder so many men have been willing and eager to cough up money to spend time with you."

"If I may add to Jay’s praise, it seems to me you wouldn’t even have to offer sex; just being around you for your personality would be worth the fee, with a couple of your essays every now and then."

I am in total agreement with Jay and Asehpe.

it’s a little as though every anthropologist who was considered an authority on some African tribe derived his conclusions from seeing a few members of the tribe at a distance and interviewing some of their enemies while completely discounting the testimony of a large number of them who were educated in England.
Ironically, anthropology did start out a little bit like that, with armchair theoreticians sending questionnaires to missionaries, travellers, and other 'knowledgeable Westerners' so that they, the missionaries, would answer questions about the tribe they were close to, rather than actually trying to talk to any of the natives themselves. Even when the first anthropologists started going to the field, they would still basically stay with the missionaries and document their understanding of what the natives were like. It wasn't until Bronislaw Malinowsky (the author of Argonauts of the Western Pacific and The Sexual Life of Savages) famously exhorted anthropologists to 'leave the missionary's verandah' and go 'into the village square' to experience life as the tribemen experienced it that the idea of participant observation became accepted and eventually the standard practice for anthropological fieldwork and data gathering.
